“Our marriage gets better and better as time goes by,” says Carol Heise on the eve of Valentine’s Day. Adds husband Kenan: “She gets cuter and cuter.” Carol and Kenan have been married 55 years. Kenan, a journalist, is finishing a special gift – a biography focusing on Carol’s work as a nurse and as an attorney representing prisoners on death row. He’s relying on interviews and on documents she kept. “There were so many different causes she was involved in. I knew about them but not in detail,” he says. “I’ve learned a lot.” (Photo by Richard Cahan)

My brother and I lived around the block from Carol and Kenan. We grew up with their kids and were over there all the time. As a kid, I couldn’t ask for better adult neighbors in my life. Plus Kenan is an amazing storyteller, and Carol is a kick-butt lawyer who has literally saved clients’ lives. What’s not to like?
