How many people get picked up by a snowplow? Supervisor Don Cornelius drove me around Evanston to explain the ins and outs of snow removal. What I learned: 1. Ten drivers were sent out Thursday – two downtown and eight to surrounding neighborhoods. 2. There are 190 miles of streets to plow. 3. Garbage trucks can be equipped with plows if snow is severe. 4. These big trucks are easier to drive than cars. “You sit higher so you see everything more clearly.” 5. Drivers work 12-hour shifts. “We feel a little unappreciated.” (Photo by Richard Cahan)

We do appreciate you, Mr. Cornelius, and everyone in your department who work such long hours during a snow event to keep our roads safe! Now if you could figure out a way to clear the crosswalks at the angled intersection of Elgin and Sherman I’d give you all gold stars! I think you need a small front loader following you around clearing blocked crosswalks and driveways.
