Lauren Shapiro volunteers for Inspire Through Flowers, which gave away its 10,000th bouquet to health care workers Thursday. The nonprofit picks up donated flowers and arranges bouquets at the Levy Senior Center. It has handed out flowers to employees at 90 hospitals, nursing homes and fire stations over the past two years. “Everybody deserves a bouquet,” said Christine Costello, one of the founders. “Inevitably, there is one nursing staff person who is in tears. They say, ‘You don’t know what this means to us.’ We say, ‘Yes, we do. That’s why we do it.’” (Photo by Richard Cahan)
