Water Transmission Main Rehabilitation Project: The city will begin rehabilitation of its 30-inch water transmission main next week on Colfax Street at Sherman Avenue and Church Street at Benson Avenue. This 8,200-foot-long pipeline increases the resilience of the citywide system and serves as a primary water supply for residents and downtown businesses.
The scope of the project includes a combination of water main replacement via open-cut construction and water main rehabilitation using the cured-in-place pipe lining method. It also includes storm installation, concrete curb and sidewalk replacement, pavement patching, hot mix asphalt street resurfacing on Sherman Avenue and Colfax Street, parkway restoration and all related incidental work.
The project is expected to be complete by spring 2023.
Central Street Bridge Replacement Project: The city is working with the Illinois Department of Transportation on the final stage of replacing the Central Street bridge over the North Shore Channel. This includes construction of the northern half of the bridge.
The scope of the project includes removal, replacement and widening of the existing bridge structure. The new bridge will be constructed from the bottom up, including pile foundations, piers, columns, abutments, wing walls, and a wider bridge deck accommodating bicycles, pedestrians and golf carts. New street lighting will be installed within the project limits, and the existing crosswalk at Bryant Avenue will be upgraded.
The entire project, including street paving, tree planting and landscaping, is expected to be complete by September or October 2022.
Re: Central St. Bridge Project to be completed “by Sept.or Oct. 2022”. The City is aware that Northwestern football returns, just two blocks away, in early Sept.? Nice timing. Why couldn’t this work be scheduled for completion by the end of August?
