Like many Americans, Rob Strom wanted to support Ukraine, but he couldn’t settle on what to donate. So he created his own movement through soup.
Strom, the owner of Prairie Moon Restaurant, 1635 Chicago Ave., is donating 100% of sales of his Ukrainian-inspired soup for the next four weeks to Doctors without Borders in Ukraine.
“With everything going on and seeing the news every day, I think everyone wants to do something to help,” Strom said.
The soup sale started on Thursday, March 10, the first soup – cabbage roll – was sold out by Saturday. A second batch was made to sell until Thursday, March 17, when the rotation switches to the next soup.
White bean and kale with kielbasa will kick off on St. Patrick’s Day and then chicken stew and wild mushroom. Strom predicts that over 100 servings of soup have been sold since Thursday, making his goal of $3,000 very attainable.
“I feel like Evanston is a really special place,” Strom said. “It’s always been such a giving community, and I know so many of our customers feel the same way we do about Ukraine. Hopefully, this will be a good way for people to donate and also get a nourishing meal.”
Strom chose Doctors without Borders in part because of his wife, Wendy Strom, an APN-CNP (advanced practice nurse-certified nurse practitioner) health care professional who has always wanted to participate in the program.
Prices range from $4.95 for a cup, $8.95 for a bowl or $9 as a two cup add-on to the restaurant’s weekly dinner for two special.
Orders can be placed on the restaurant website, in person or by calling 847-864-8328.
