On March 8, 2022, the Evanston Police Department conducted tobacco product compliance checks. The compliance checks were performed at 33 Evanston businesses to determine if local tobacco product retailers are complying with the minimum-age tobacco laws that prohibit the sale of tobacco products to persons under the age of 21.
The following (1) establishment failed to successfully pass the compliance check, resulting in a City Ordinance citation for selling tobacco/alternative nicotine product to a person under the age of 21 years old:
- Citgo Gas Station – 400 block of Asbury Ave.
With the help from a grant awarded by the Illinois Department of Human Services Tobacco Enforcement Program, the Evanston Police Department educates local tobacco product retailers on minimum-age tobacco product laws and the importance of verifying the age of customers before selling age-restrictive products such as tobacco products. Tobacco product retailers are given a retailer education packet and notified that the compliance checks are going to occur in the near future.
