Evanston’s boys track team scored relay victories in the 800-meter and 1600-meter events Saturday, powering the Wildkits to a second place team finish overall at the Jim Arnold Invitational hosted by Glenbard West.
Coach Don Michelin’s squad totaled 90 points and trailed only Oak Park-River Forest (118) in the 13-team field.
The ETHS team of Vorn Ellis, Miles Granjean, Chase Cubia and Matt Cless took top honors in the 800 relay in 1 minute, 30.91 seconds, beating runnerup OPRF by three full seconds.
In the 1600, the foursome of Granjean, Cless, Ellis and Skyler Lee posted a winning time of 3:29.30, almost five seconds faster than South Elgin.
Cubia, Granjean, Ellis and Cless also teamed up for a third place finish in the 400 relay in 44.16 in a photo finish with Lake Park (44.10) and South Elgin (44.11). The 3200 relay added a fourth place effort in 8:40 flat behind Cormac Schliesmann, Dylan Eyler, Solomon Greene and Jack Kleinschmit.
Ellis scored an individual win in the open 200 with a winning time of 22.54 and Cless remained unbeaten in the high jump with a best jump of 1.97 meters. Also scoring top five individual finishes for the Kits were Jalen James, second in the triple jump at 13.26; Lee, third in the 300 hurdles in 41.68; Cubia, third in the 100 in 11.63; Granjean, fourth in the 100 in 11.73; Tim Russell, fifth in the shotput at 14.82; and Justin Tharayil, fifth in the high jump at 1.82.
