Northwestern University sent out an AlertNU email warning the campus community to shelter in place Monday afternoon, May 2, but a second all-clear message was issued a few minutes later.
The initial warning: “There is an Active Threat event on the Chicago Campus. Run, Hide, Fight. Take proper shelter. Lock and/or barricade doors.”
The text of the message read:
“At approximately 1:30 p.m. today, Chicago Police attempted to make a traffic stop in the area of Lake Shore Drive and Chicago Avenue. The suspect fled the vehicle and was last seen in the Morton Medical Research Building on the Chicago campus. Chicago Police and Northwestern University Police are actively searching for the suspect.”
A few minutes later, at 2:23 p.m., a second AlertNU message was posted:
“AlertNU: The Active Threat on the Chicago campus has ended. There is no longer a need to shelter in place. The suspect was been apprehended in basement of the Ward Building. The suspect was taken into custody.”
