Evanston’s three seniors earned top 32 finishes at the Illinois High School Association state badminton tournament held May 12-14 at Hinsdale South High School.
Both Catherine Hanson in singles and the doubles team of Ella Berkowitz and Lula Garfield scored a pair of victories in the three-day tournament before being eliminated on Friday in the third round of consolation bracket play.
Hanson, after losing to Carissa Chen of Waubonsie Valley 21-4, 21-2 in the first round, bounced back with tight decisions over Alisa Hilaly of Hoffman Estates (22-20, 24-22) and Avaniajoy Raval of Glenbard North (21-12, 24-22).
But she bowed out with a 21-11, 21-15 loss to Romeoville’s Maya Edrada and finished the season with an overall won-loss record of 20-12.
Berkowitz and Garfield combined to split their four matches and finished 28-11, including a Central Suburban League South division championship at No. 1 doubles.
