The application process to become a firefighter/paramedic with the Evanston Fire Department is now open. Apply for the City of Evanston Fire Department. The base salary ranges from $60,990.07 to $101,694.96. The deadline to apply is July 29.
Being an Evanston firefighter/paramedic is both professionally and personally rewarding. Opportunities to diversify in this career include becoming a hazardous materials specialist, technical rescue expert, surface water rescuer or dive team member. Fire prevention training and community-based programing are a few of the disciplines offered within this line of work.
Individuals pursuing a fire-service career should be aware that being a firefighter/paramedic is both physically and emotionally taxing
and often requires responding to highly stressful and distressing situations.
Click here for more information on becoming an Evanston firefighter. Applications will be accepted from June 1 to July 29. A written exam will be offered from Aug. 16 to Aug. 18. Preference points will be given to candidates who live in Evanston, have military experience or hold a valid paramedic license or graduated from the EFD Explorer Program or another fire department’s explorer or cadet program.

To apply, you must:
- Be 21 years of age by the application deadline. If 35 years of age or over, must currently be a firefighter/paramedic.
- Be a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States.
- Be a high school graduate.
- Be a licensed driver.
- Successfully complete the candidate physical ability test (CPAT) with ladder climb certification by Aug. 15, 2022.
- Have the ability to complete and pass firefighter/paramedic education and certifications.
