The Evanston Police Department and Evanston/Skokie School District 65 are close to completing their respective investigations into three nooses found May 13 in a tree between Haven Middle School and Kingsley Elementary School, Superintendent Devon Horton said at the District 65 school board meeting Monday, June 13.
“EPD is still investigating, and so we’re waiting for them to finalize their investigation so that we can then finalize ours,” Horton said. “And at this point, they’re close to wrapping it up, and that’s the only information I’m able to share.”
In the month since the incident occurred, both the Evanston Police Department and the school district have yet to provide any new information or details to the public regarding their investigations into the nooses. Evanston police previously denied a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the RoundTable for the police report about the nooses, citing as grounds for the denial that the records involved juveniles.
In a Tuesday email to the RoundTable, Evanston Police Commander Ryan Glew echoed Horton’s statement that the police have almost completed their investigation into the incident.
“I do anticipate we are nearing a conclusion but I don’t have a definite time frame,” Glew said. “The district has been cooperating.”
