The Humane Society Legislative Fund and our supporters in the Chicago area and nationwide are so grateful to U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky for her extraordinary leadership on two essential bills – the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 3355), to end inhumane horse slaughter, and the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act (H.R. 5441), to end the deliberate infliction of severe pain on the legs and hooves of some show horses.

As the lead sponsor of SAFE, a co-lead on PAST and the chairwoman of the House Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce, Schakowsky spoke with passion and guided both of these bills to unanimous bipartisan approval in her subcommittee.
I know she will continue to press her colleagues to get these two crucial bills for horses approved soon in committee and by the full House of Representatives with no weakening amendments.
On behalf of the vast majority of the American public that supports animal protection and opposes these cruel practices, I offer a resounding thanks to Chairwoman Schakowsky!
