Shavon Burrell rises in worship in a tent next to Mt. Pisgah Ministry during the church’s annual eight-night crusade. She was responding to a powerful sermon by Darin McAllister, who grew up in the area, worked as a Los Angeles police officer and FBI agent but was convicted of mortgage fraud. Sentenced to four years in prison, he made it back. He is now an executive at the Los Angeles Mission, a huge homeless shelter. Clifford J. Wilson, senior pastor of the church at 1813 Church Street, is in the background. (Photo by Richard Cahan)
