On Thursday, October 6 at approximately 5 p.m., the Evanston Fire Department responded to calls of multiple capsized boats in the area of Clark Street Beach and the Dempster Street Boat Launch following a sudden change in weather and lake conditions.
Upon arrival, Evanston Fire Department water rescue crews observed five overturned boats and immediately initiated a full water rescue response, utilizing Marine 21 boat and jet ski units. A total of eight individuals were pulled from the water, with none requiring transport to local hospitals. All boaters are currently accounted for.
A Chicago Fire Department helicopter unit assisted with the search, and ambulances from several neighboring departments were called in to assist in the event of multiple hospital transports.
Evanston Fire Department crews regularly train for lakefront rescue situations. Most recently, on September 15, the department hosted a joint training exercise with area fire departments focusing on the location and rescue of stranded boaters or swimmers in dusk and night-time conditions.
