As of 2023, the Evanston Public Library no longer has a social worker. “It’s very important,” said Vincent Harris, who uses the library twice a week. “They help me get resources.” Harris, who just turned 60, used to work as an entertainer but has been homeless for more than two years. Computers help him. Spokesperson Jenette Sturges said the library is “completely committed” to hiring a social worker but needs to find the right person. In the meantime, patrons who need help are not certain where to turn. (Photo by Richard Cahan)
