In an effort to combat rising Hyundai vehicle thefts, the Evanston Police Department, in partnership with Hyundai Motor America, will give away free steering wheel locks to Evanston community members that own or lease a Hyundai manufactured before 2021. Evanston community members that live or work in Evanston are eligible to register for this event.
Community members must come to the Evanston Police Station, 1454 Elmwood Ave., at their scheduled time and will be required to bring their Hyundai along with proof of Evanston residency or employment before being issued a steering wheel lock. Limit is one lock per community member. Pre-registration is required and there is a limited supply of steering wheel locks.
Below are the dates and times available:
Tuesday, Jan. 24
- 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
- 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 25
- 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 27
- 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
Monday, Jan. 30
- 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
- 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
Evanston community members should come to the front desk during their scheduled time. A Community Policing Unit Officer will greet community members, verify vehicle, residency, or employment information, and distribute the steering wheel locks.

This would have been a more informative story if it had included reasons why Hyundais, in particular, have become a targeted for theft.
