Mayor Daniel Biss and 30 other members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a nonpartisan coalition of current and former mayors that is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, have released new data about the manufacturers of guns recovered in local crimes.
The data, compiled in a report, “Who is Manufacturing Crime Guns?,” highlights the gun industry’s role in supplying and profiting from guns used to commit crimes. According to Evanston data, Glock and Smith & Wesson were the top two manufacturers of guns recovered in local crimes from 2017 through 2021, accounting for 34% of recovered firearms.
“It’s long past due for gun manufacturers to take responsibility for their role in fueling our nation’s gun violence crisis,” Biss said. “I’m proud to stand with Everytown for Gun Safety and mayors from across the country to hold gun makers accountable for the immeasurable harm caused by their products, and to target solutions to make our communities safer.”
In releasing the report, Biss joined other city leaders in calling for gun manufacturers to take steps to prevent diversion of their products to the criminal market, including:
- Establish a dealer code of conduct to ensure that retailers who sell their firearms adhere to basic guidelines
- Better monitor their supply chains to detect dealers breaking the law
- Stop all work with dealers who sell guns in circumstances where guns may be sold without a background check, including gun shows and online marketplaces.
The report, at everytownresearch.org, includes data of 171,501 crime guns recovered from 2017 to 2021 in 31 U.S. cities. Guns recovered in connection to crimes , referred to as “crime guns,” are important to understanding gun violence, trafficking and public safety solutions.
Other cities participating in the analysis include Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville, New York City and Philadelphia.
