Thirty-six students were honored with 2023 African American Youth Achievement Awards at Evanston Township High School. The students were chosen from the city’s elementary schools and high school. “This is a formal recognition by the school district and their teachers of their excellence,” said co-coordinator Denise Martin. “It becomes a family affair.” Award winners were given a $25 gift certificate to a bookstore, a double-scoop of ice cream and a family membership to the YMCA as well as a kente stole. They will be recognized by the City Council on Monday night. Welcoming them on stage was the drum performing group S.O.U.L. Creations. (Photo by Richard Cahan)
