Krenice and Derrick Ramsey plan to give out more than 60,000 new books this year that reflect the experience of Black children. “It really started from my love for my niece,” said Krenice. “I would give her books every year on her birthday and I was really disheartened walking into the big-box bookstores and not being able to find books with little Black girls on the cover. I decided to do something about it.” She and her husband started the non-profit Young, Black & Lit in 2018 and have given away 58,000 books. They plan to up their annual giving this year on the organization’s fifth anniversary. Krenice is a lawyer; Derrick works in financial services. They moved to Evanston last month with their 8-month-old baby girl. (Photo by Richard Cahan)
