Aisha Steele practices cardiopulmonary resuscitation Sunday at Evanston’s first hands-only community CPR classes. The sessions were held in the wake of football player Damar Hamlin’s collapse on the field last month on national TV. “Suddenly people saw CPR does make a difference,” said Evanston Fire Department instructor Jason Hays. Participants were taught how to do chest compressions – not breathing. “I like it a lot,” said Steele. “It gives you focus.” The hands-only course is effective and easier to understand than certified training. “It makes people not so scared and more apt to help,” said EFD Fire Apparatus Operator Jennifer Ceriale, who runs the course. “The more people who know CPR, the more chance I have to survive.” (Photo by Richard Cahan)
