Vaido Karsokas (left) and Billy Brady carry their surfboards into Lake Michigan. “We’ve been watching for this for a couple of days,” said Karsokas. He and some 10 other surfers gather at the first hint of riding waves. “No matter what your job is, we all make it out here,” said Karsokas, chef at Winnetka’s Towne & Oak restaurant. Brady is a professor at Northwestern’s management school. “I make my own hours, but I can’t always slip away,” he said. Karsokas predicted big waves coming from the east. “It’s a little more raw exposure, a little more power,” he said. “We’re going to get our butts kicked for a couple of hours.” (Photo by Richard Cahan)
