About 60 people rally in Fountain Square against a proposal to overhaul the Israeli judicial system giving elected officials more power. “If you’re a supporter of democracy in general and if you support certain values that sometimes, even in this country, are at risk, you should sympathize with what’s happening in Israel,” said Kobi Garfinkel, one of the organizers. Tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Israeli cities for the past nine weeks demonstrating against the plan that would weaken the country’s Supreme Court. A “small group of extremists,” Garfinkel said, is trying to “take the country towards almost a dictatorship, where the rule of law and the judicial system are not going to function and protect minorities and civil rights.” It was the third rally this year in Evanston.
