Pi Day, Evanston style. Jory Downer, owner of Bennison’s Bakery, tops mini-chocolate cream pies in the bakery kitchen. They – along with lemon meringue, apple and strawberry rhubarb pies – sold for $3.14 for one day only. “I’ll be honest. We don’t make any money on these pies, but it creates some excitement,” he said. Downer, a certified master baker, has been at Bennison’s for 47 years. He works most days from 4:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. “It’s not a chore to be here,” he said. The store makes about 1,400 of the 3-inch pies. “Typically by early afternoon it’s over.” (Photo by Richard Cahan)
