“We had four blank walls in this huge gymnasium,” said Tim Carter. “We figured, let’s get some students in here to brighten up and lively up this place.” That’s how Carter, recreation manager of the Parks and Recreation Department, explains how students from Beacon Academy were invited to paint two murals on a wall of the Chandler-Newberger Community Center gym. Eighteen students at the private high school in downtown Evanston are spending the week tracing and coloring the rendered mural, designed by Chandler staff member Rachel Darter, that is projected onto the gym wall. They should be done on Friday. (Photo by Richard Cahan)
