King Arts third grader Richa Cordero (left) checks out a game designed by Simon Downs, a sixth grader at Chute Middle School. That’s Simon on the right. He’s being helped by brother Luke. They were at the Saturday, March 11 Cardboard Carnival at Fleetwood-Jourdain Center. About 60 Evanston students created games using cardboard, everyday material and at least one motorized element. Simon’s been working on his game for a month. “There was a giant monstrosity in our living room,” said brother Luke. Kirby Callam, whose EvanSTEM helped run the event, said the carnival teaches how systems work together. Hundreds of students and parents filled the gym. “It’s a chance for kids to do creative design, engineering and then celebrate and show off.” (Photo by Richard Cahan)
