It’s a long day at the polls. Election judge Kate Parker-Barrows checks her computer as she waits for voters in Precinct 3 of Ward 4. She has formed a bond with fellow election judges (from left) Julie Hecht, Airan Wright and Mac Durkes. They’ve been working together on election days for several years. “We all know each other and like to get together,” she said. By 2 p.m., only nine residents had showed up to vote. Why do the judges do it? “Civic duty,” said Parker-Barrows. “Inertia,” said Durkes. The highlight, said Wright: “It’s fun to help first-time voters.” (Photo by Richard Cahan)
