“You cannot take this to the bank,” warned Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) as she handed this check to Dara Munson, chief executive of Family Focus. The money, a congressionally directed funding grant, will go toward updating the old Foster School building at 2010 Dewey Ave., home of Family Focus and 15 other social service organizations. “It’s a beautiful building that needs some love,” said Munson. Family Focus is raising about $12 million to rehabilitate the building, which opened in 1905. “We are committed to this physical structure,” Munson said. It was a predominately Black school for decades. In the second row are supporters Anne Sills (from left), Bennie Jones, Michelle Macklin, Rose Johnson and Stephen Vick.
