Back inside after a two-year COVID hiatus, the annual Warren “Billy” Cherry Scholarship awards dinner was held at Maggiano’s restaurant in Skokie on April 30. The date, remarked Patty Cherry Reece, sister of Warren Cherry and scholarship fund chair, synched with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the scholarship fund, to be held on Sept. 30 of this year.
The mission of the scholarship fund, named in memory of Cherry, who was a much- loved and respected educator in School District 65, is “to perpetuate his total acceptance of all people, his commitment to the highest standards of educational excellence and his energetic dedication to enriching the children and institutions of Evanston.”
Moderated by board member Timon Bernstein Jandora, who attended Lincoln School when Cherry served as principal there, the evening featured a keynote speech by Evanston Township High School Superintendent Marcus Campbell, a film by Susan Hope Engel, remarks by Patty Reece, Robert Reece and awardee Alexandria Bolling, and the presentation of awards to this year’s scholars.
The 23 recipients are Bolling, Destini Brown, Victoria Brown, Michael Burrell, Kalea Chatman, Jaheim Cochrane, Graciela Corona, Ava Daye, Sadaya Deeble, Wendy Delgado, Andrea Guy, Michelle Hernandez, Rachel Holmes, Leila Lemieux-Jordan, Marcus Louis-Charles, Kaia Magno, Aryel Mason, Emily Minerof, Stephanie Munoz, Chassa Pratt, Bi’niah Robinson, Jaydlyn Rogers and Reina Waters.
