The joy of being a team. Evanston Wildkits freshman baseball players gather on the field after defeating Maine South 9-4. “They are a great group of kids,” said coach Ben Wilson (foreground). “They’re hilarious.” Wilson shares coaching with Marcus Mixon (right), who had to work Tuesday’s game as a fill-in umpire. “I was as fair as possible,” he told the team. Both coaches played for the Wildkits. “I didn’t realize until much later as an adult how much baseball relates to life. Working on a team, battling through adversity, trying your best, all stuff you learn later,” Wilson said. The freshmen, now 9-12, have nine games to play this year. (Photo by Richard Cahan)
