Before the Evanston Township High School Class of 2023 walked across the stage at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday morning, Makedah Abraham, senior poet, performed a spoken word piece about navigating the journey of high school through the unprecedented times of the pandemic era. (Fellow senior Heath Grossman delivered the senior class address.)
“Turns out, a lot of us were in the same boat, struggling to row amidst the storm,” Abraham said. “I’m proud to say that, despite the hurricane that was our high school experience, we’re still here. Despite a pandemic hitting our nation, we persevered.”
You can view Abraham’s performance at the 1 hour, 13 minute mark in this video, or the embedded video below jumps directly to her poem.
