The League of Women Voters of Evanston is pleased to announce that Zoe Kaufman is the recipient of its 2023 scholarship to a graduating senior at Evanston Township High School.
While in high school, Kaufman founded and served as executive director of an Illinois nonprofit called Refugees are Served Here, which helps refugees pursue educational goals, further businesses and adapt to the social cultural and political atmosphere in the United States. She has also lobbied to support equitable immigration laws.
In addition, Kaufman served as co-president of the ETHS Community Service Club, as a director for ambassadors, in a leadership role in the Emerge Health Center sexual education project and as a regular volunteer at local soup kitchens, food, clothing and voter registration drives. While engaged in her various civic activities, she also earned a 4.6 GPA.
Kaufman will attend Brown University in the fall and plans to major in political science.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation by citizens in government. This scholarship is given to a student who has demonstrated commitment to an activity that promotes participation in the political process within ETHS and/or the Evanston community and exemplifies a high standard of good citizenship and social involvement, consistent with the League’s mission. This includes participating in activities such as, but not limited to, student government, assisting with voter registration and participating in other organizations that show engagement and interest in public service and the political process.
The League is very pleased to award this scholarship to Zoe Kaufman. Through her actions, she exemplifies civic engagement and citizen participation in the political process.
