Boy Scout Troop 3 is the oldest existing Boy Scout troop in Evanston and one of the oldest in Illinois. Established in 1915 and meeting weekly at Orrington School, the troop is continuing its tradition of serving the youth and community of Evanston.

During the last 100 years, the troop has produced more than 90 Eagle Scouts, Scouting’s highest honor. The results of recent Troop 3 Eagle Scout projects can be seen in the benches at the Rotary Friendship Garden on McCormick and the picnic tables and trees at James Park, as well as improvements at the Evanston Ecology Center. In addition, many Eagle Scout projects have benefited schools and religious institutions in Evanston, including risers in the music room at Haven Middle School and updating youth activity rooms at local places of worship.

Troop 3 is sponsored by American Legion Post 42. The two groups have formed a mutually beneficial bond; the Post lends some financial support to the troop, and boys provide service at several Post events each year, including the August golf outing and November pancake breakfast. Together, the Post and troop plant American flags on veteran’s graves for Memorial Day, and participate in Rebuilding Together each April.

Curt Nerenberg,Troop 3 Committee Chair, was a youth in the troop, and has continued his involvement for more than 40 years. He credits the success and longevity of the troop to dedicated adult leaders and to the boy-led philosophy of the troop. “Scouting is one of the few things available to young people that actually helps them to develop their leadership abilities. Over the years I have seen many shy young men grow through Scouting to become very effective and successful leaders in many endeavors.”

The troop will begin the year with a Centennial Celebration on Jan. 2. There will be troop memorabilia on display and a presentation of Troop 3 throughout its 100-year history. Former members or friends of the troop are invited to contact the alumni group at troop3evanstonalumni @gmail.com for more information.

Troop 3, like all Boy Scout troops, is open to all boys who are least 11 years old, have completed 5th grade, or have earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light award.
