An accompanying chart shows the weekly number of new cases per 100,000 people for Evanston, Suburban Cook County, Chicago and the State. The chart shows that the number of new cases has increased in each area in the last week.  The chart also shows that each area is still much higher than IDPH’s target of 50 weekly cases per 100,000, a number that would enable a region to effectively contact trace and suppress the virus.

Evanston

There were 17 new confirmed COVID-19 cases of Evanston residents today.

The average number of new cases per day in the last seven days is 23.1, up from 14.4 on Dec. 31.  For purposes of comparison, on Oct. 12, the seven-day average was 5.6. During the last seven days there was an average of 1,270 tests per day, the highest seven-day average by far during the entire pandemic.

There has been a total of 3,352 COVID-19 cases of Evanston residents during the pandemic, 344 of which are active. An accompanying chart shows the trend.

In the last seven days, there was a total of 162 new COVID-19 cases of Evanstonians. That equates to about 211 new cases per 100,000 people in the seven-day period. IDPH’s target to control community spread is 50.

The case positivity rate over the last seven days is 1.8%.

No Evanstonian died due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.  The number of deaths due to COVID-19 remains at 96.

Impact of Northwestern University. Northwestern University has posted data on its website reporting that between Jan. 4 and 10, there were 60 new confirmed COVID-19 cases of faculty, staff and students. The number includes those who live outside of Evanston. The City claims it does not know how many of these cases are people who live in Evanston.

Illinois

 In the State, there were 6,642 new COVID-19 cases reported today.

Statewide, the average number of new cases per day in the last seven days is 6,921. The seven-day average one week ago, on Jan. 5, was 6,245, so today’s number is an 11% increase.

Today’s seven-day average, though, is down from an all-time high of 12,380 on Nov. 17.  An accompanying chart shows the trend.

In the seven days ending Jan. 7, the number of new cases per 100,000 people in the State was 382.

The seven-day case positivity rate for the State today is 7.5% and the test positivity rate is 8.6%. IDPH’s target to control community spread is 5%.

On a Statewide basis, the number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 was 3,553 as of midnight on Jan. 11. This is down from an all-time high of 6,171 on Nov. 23.

The number of patients using ICU beds is 757, down from 1,195 on Dec. 1. The number of patients on ventilators is 409, down from 724 on Dec.  1.

Deaths: On a Statewide basis, there were 117 deaths due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, which brings the total to 17,743.

For the last seven days, the numbers of deaths in the State are 139, 177, 126, 100, 81, 58 and 117 today.  The seven-day average is 114.
