Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

On February 27, 2020 ETHS District 202 sent a message about the coronavirus (COVID-19) to students, families, and staff. ETHS continues to monitor this rapidly changing health concern at local, state, and national levels. ETHS is acting with guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the local public health department to determine if conditions require canceling public events in our community or closing the high school. As of March 6, 2020, IDPH does not recommend canceling or closing.

Please review the following information to stay informed about current guidance and resources.

Preventative actions: In general, everyone should contribute to minimize the spread of any respiratory virus, including COVID-19. As a reminder, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends specific actions you can take: 

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with tissue, then discard tissue in the trash.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or with alcohol-based sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home if you are sick.

Fight fear and stigma: The ETHS community should take an active role to prevent racial or ethnic discrimination associated with COVID-19. People with origins in any particular country are no more likely to get COVID-19 than anyone else. Help stop fear by letting people know that certain individuals, such as people of Asian descent, do not have an increased chance of getting or spreading COVID-19. 

Travel advisories: Given that the COVID-19 outbreak is a global health concern, international travelers should stay updated with, and adhere to, travel advisories provided by the CDC. ETHS closely monitors ETHS-sponsored student travel locally, nationally, and internationally. We also monitor travel advisories issued by the CDC and U.S. State Department. We will provide updates as needed to impacted students and families.  

District precautions: As a practice, ETHS is routinely cleaning and disinfecting all frequently touched surfaces. In addition, ETHS has an e-learning plan to prepare for continuity of instruction and minimize any disruption to operations in the event public health officials notify us that more action is required.

Reporting a student absence: If a student is absent from school due to sickness, parents and guardians should follow the steps on How to Report Student Absences as outlined on the ETHS website and in The Pilot handbook. As a practice, parents/guardians are asked the reason for a student absence and should provide a note to the Deans’ Office when a student is seen by a doctor. If you have questions about instruction or homework, students and parents are encouraged to reach out to teachers to address school work owed.

Stay updated on district notifications: The ETHS notification system will send important messages to parents/guardians based on the contact information provided in their Home Access Center account. Students will receive email messages through their school-issued Google email account (@eths202.org). Parents/guardians should follow these steps to keep their contact information up-to-date in Home Access Center. Parents/guardians who need assistance with Home Access Center can contact the Home Access Help Desk 847-424-7121 or email homeaccesscenter@eths.k12.il.us.
