DetailsThe Mitchell Museum of the American Indian will host its annual benefit at the Wilmette Golf Club (3900 Fairway Dr.) on Saturday, March 2nd from 6:00-9:30pm. This year’s event theme is “Empowering Cultural Understanding & Appreciation” and is planned to be a spectacular evening including dinner, full bar, silent auction, grand prize raffle drawing, live flute music, and fashion show by Fox Way Designs. Fox Way Designs is one of the indigenous owned businesses featured in the museum’s exhibition “Indigenous Entrepreneurship” which opened in 2018. Fox Way Designs was created by sisters Josee and Angel Starr and their mother Cyndee Fox-Starr. They are Odawa, Omaha, and enrolled members of The Three Affiliated tribes. Raised within the Chicago urban native community, they have been participating in powwows, celebrations, and ceremonies since they were born. Cyndee’s mother, Josephine Blackbird-Fox, taught them how to bead, sew, and cook traditional foods from a very young age. Angel and Josee graduated from the CIMC Entrepreneurial Training Program in Illinois and California. They take great pride in where they come from and use that as inspiration to create modern-day clothing and accessories with a native flair. Along with their clothing creations, they also make star quilts, dance regalia and beadwork. “Today, as we have been intertwined with multi-tribal ethnicities, we struggle to be recognized as Natives in the everyday world,” says Cyndee Fox-Starr. “Time has come that we can share our Native heritage on a daily basis. Our business casual can be worn by everyone to honor the First people of this land.” This year’s benefit theme, “Empowering Cultural Understanding & Appreciation,” reinforces the museum’s mission to promote and share a deeper understanding and respect for Native American peoples. “This year we are excited to share the beautiful clothing of Fox Way Designs in a fashion show and many Native themed silent auction and raffle prizes. Why not enjoy a wonderful evening with live entertainment, great food and drinks, nurture your understanding of Native American cultures and support the museum’s programs and exhibits in the process?” said Kathleen McDonald, Executive Director of the Mitchell Museum. Proceeds from the annual benefit will support the Mitchell Museum’s collection’s care, exhibits, programs, teacher training, family craft programs, and community outreach. Since 1977, the Mitchell Museum has worked to dispel the misconceptions and stereotypes that fuel discrimination against American Indian peoples today, while also revealing the beauty and inspiration behind their unique genre of art. The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian is one of only a handful of museums in the country that focuses exclusively on the art, history, culture and current events of American Indian and First Nation peoples throughout the United States and Canada. In 2017, the Mitchell Museum won the Illinois Association of Museums’ Superior Award for the exhibit “Contemporary Native Women Opening Doors to Change.” Among this year’s silent auction items are tickets to a variety of theater and sporting events, limited edition and one of a kind art pieces, custom jewelry, restaurant and spa packages, and more. This year's grand prize is a trio of collectibles valued at over $1,100. The set includes a Pendleton blanket designed by Dale Chihuly, a bronze sculpture titled "Signals" by Dell Weston, and a Hermes scarf featuring a kachina doll pattern. The winner need not be present to win, and raffle tickets are available for purchase now up until the time of the drawing for $20 each or $100 for six tickets. To purchase tickets for both the benefit and grand prize raffle, contact the Mitchell Museum at 847-475-1030 or email visitor services at rsvp@mitchellmuseum.org. Tickets are $155 per person. Tables that seat 8 are also available for $1050, a $190 savings. The event is underwritten in part through the generous support of our lead sponsors: The Pritzker Military Museum & Library, Jan and Jeff Berkson, and Byline Bank. For more information about The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, visit www.mitchellmuseum.org, or call 847-475-1030. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, students and children, and free for Mitchell Museum members and Tribal citizens.
