A Mexican Christmas

December 9 @ 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

The Newberry Consort presents this beloved holiday tradition featuring Christmas music from 17th-century Mexico City. The concert features both classical music that would have been sung by nuns of the Convent of the Encarnación as well as joyful “villancicos,” the folk-based songs of praise and celebration. Our two ensembles will create this feast for the ears with music by composers from both Old and New Spain, featuring our own nun’s ensemble of the Newberry Consort directed by Ellen Hargis, and our guests from EnsAmble Ad-Hoc, led by traditional and early music specialists Francy Acosta and Jose Luis Posada. Featuring rarely heard instruments such as the bajón (Spanish baroque bassoon), leona (large guitar from Veracruz) and the quijada de burro (a percussion instrument made from a burro’s jawbone), as well as a cast of 17 singers who will create the authentic soundscape of a Mexican Christmas. Subtitles will be projected in both English and Spanish. Tickets are $25, $10 for students with a valid student ID, or free for children under 16. Families can purchase a 10-person pass for $100. 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2022 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 939 Hinman Ave., Evanston. Visit
