Ecology Fall Speaker Series: Designing Nature Play Spaces

November 17 @ 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Over the past few years, the Chicago Park District has been going through an exciting transformation of turning underutilized park spaces into nature play spaces. These spaces incorporate land restoration and create opportunities of “nature play” for youth in many different neighborhoods. Sean Shaffer, the Chicago Park District’s Nature Play Specialist, has been a driving force behind this transformation and will be leading a presentation at the Ecology Center called, “Stacking Sticks in Chicago Parks: Why Nature Play is More Important Now Than Ever”. During this presentation, participants will learn about the purpose of play, the benefits of nature play spaces for child development, different types of nature play equipment, and about the specific steps one can go about in creating nature play spaces. He will also show examples of nature play spaces throughout the Chicago Park District and discuss how communities and organizations are creating interactive programming around these spaces. Sean will also bring nature play kits and encourage some fun participant interaction. To register for this free program, please call the Ecology Center at (847) 448-8256 or register online at using ctivity code: 133125.
