From the Studio – Two Short Operas

hews presents a double bill of two short operas titled “From the Studio.” It features the first opera intentionally composed for radio, Giancarlo Menotti’s comic opera The Old Maid and the Thief, which premiered in 1939. It is paired with an 18-minute gem by Lee Hoiby called Bon Appétit!, which premiered in 1989 and sets the script of a Julia Child television show to music, with a solo mezzo-soprano singing through the preparation of a chocolate cake. These two short operas will be presented without intermission.
