Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 through October 15 with community events, activities and programming throughout Evanston!

City of Evanston

Latinx Heritage Month Celebration. As a part of the “My City, Your City, Our City” initiative, the City of Evanston is hosting a community celebration in on Sat., Sept. 24 from 4 p.m. to 9 Elks Park, located at Callan Avenue and Mulford Street.

Community members of all ages are invited to come out to enjoy free food from Cocina Azteca Tacos, a traditional clothing competition, raffle prizes, an obstacle course, button making, Taino Petroglyphs by Saul Rodrigues, partner tents and more! The event will culminate with a showing of the movie Encanto at 7 p.m as a part of the Starlight Movies in the Park series.

Evanston Public Library

Hispanic/Latinx-Owned Business Month! Join the Evanston Public Library as they highlight and support Hispanic/Latinx owned businesses in the community from Wed., Sept. 21 to Sat., Oct. 15. More information.

Short & Sweet: Borreguita and the Coyote. Take home a DIY story time kit featuring the tale “Borreguita and the Coyote” from Mexico with a sweet, simple craft. Kits are available while supplies last starting Thurs., Sept. 15 at the Main Library and Robert Crown Branch Library. More information.

Finn and Hada’s Around the World Scavenger Hunt. Join in for two exciting scavenger hunts, one at Robert Crown and one at the Main Library between Thurs., Sept. 15 and Sat., Oct. 15. Find out where Hada and Finn have been for the chance to win some special prizes. More information.

“100% Hispanic and 100% American” Display. Head to the Robert Crown Branch Library to learn more about the impact of Hispanics in the U.S. on Thurs., Sept. 15 through Sat., Oct. 15. More information.

Latino Family Game Night/Noche de Juegos! Participate in family-friendly competitions of lotería and other games on Sun., Sept 25 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sun., Oct. 2 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Main Children’s Room of the Main Library. More informationRegister.

Make Your Own Worry Doll for Hispanic Heritage Month/Crea tu Muñeca quitapenas! Take home a kit and learn about a beautiful Mayan tradition while you make your own doll. Kits will be available while supplies last. This activity will begin on Mon., Oct. 3 at both the Main Library and Robert Crown Branch Library. More information.

Family Movie Day: Encanto. Bring your friends and family out to enjoy the film Encanto on Sun., Oct. 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room of the Main Library. More information.

Evanston Vet Center

Hispanic Heritage Month Veteran Program. Join the Evanston Vet Center and your fellow veterans in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday, October 13 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Evanston Vet Center, located at 1901 Howard St. Immediately following the program, there will be a culturally-based luncheon provided at not cost.
