Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra
Thursday, December 1, 7:30 p.m. CST
Pick-Staiger Concert Hall
Robert G. Hasty, conductor; Kaytlin Withers, soprano (Concerto/Aria Competition winner)
The Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra opens their December concert with a work Mozart composed while “up to his eyeballs with work.” While teaching, rearranging an opera score, and navigating complications with his engagement to Constanze Weber, he wrote the serenade that formed the basis of the “Haffner” Symphony. Following the symphony is a dramatic cantata that Haydn composed for the most famous prima donna of the era, Brigitta Giorgi Banti. The program concludes with Beethoven’s Second Symphony, written just as the composer had begun to acknowledge his hearing loss with his close associates. Though the symphony challenged the sensibilities of some critics of his time, it was also hailed as “a noteworthy, colossal work of depth, power, and artistic knowledge like very few.”
W. A. Mozart, Symphony No. 35 in D Major (“Haffner”)
Joseph Haydn, Scena di Berenice
Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphony No. 2 in D Major
