Referendum Coming on Harley Clark Mansion
Submitted by Central Street Neighbors

Central Street Neighbors Association will host a special program to address the implications of the upcoming referendum on the Harley Clarke mansion, and to discuss the status of talks relative to demolition, and provide context on the history leading up to the current state of affairs.

The forum is set for 7 p.m., Wed., Oct. 10, at the Chandler Center at 1028 Central Street. Parking is available in the Golf Course/Legion lot.

On election day Nov. 6, 2018, Evanston voters will be asked to weigh in on an advisory referendum on Harley Clarke. CSNA has confirmed the attendance of speakers for the forum who represent Save Harley Clarke, the sponsor, of the referendum and is inviting representatives from other organizations who can provide context and perspective on the history of Harley Clarke and next steps in light of the parallel path being taken by the City to move forward on a memorandum of understanding to proceed with demolition. Among issues to be addressed is the ongoing effort to save the property for public use by groups such as Evanston Lakehouse & Gardens.Speakers will discuss the issues surrounding Harley Clarke and what the referendum means for the City and its residents.

Among questions to be answered are: “What happens if the referendum passes?” “What are the next steps?” “Who is involved?” “What will happen if the referendum fails?” and “What happens if the plan to demolish moves forward?” “What is thee pubic benefit of these alternatives, and the cost?” Underlying the public debate are issues of ethics, funding, legal challenges, and more.

For information the referendum reads as follows:

Shall the City of Evanston protect from demolition and preserve the landmark Harley Clarke buildings and gardens next to Lighthouse Beach, for use and access as public property, consistent with the Evanston Lakefront Master Plan, at minimal or no cost to Evanston taxpayers?”

All members of the Evanston community are welcome to attend. There will be a question and answer period. Light refreshments will be served.
