On March 20, at approximately 5:32 p.m., an Evanston Police Traffic Unit Officer was on stationary patrol in the area Dobson and Grey monitoring traffic due to complaints of stop sign violations. The officer observed a Silver Hyundai fail to properly stop at the intersection. The officer stopped the vehicle for the violation. Assist officers arrived soon after, said Commander Ryan Glew of the Evanston Police Department.
Upon making contact with the driver of the vehicle and its occupants the officer detected an odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle, said the Comander. Officers investigated the odor and located a loaded Taurus 9 MM semi-automatic handgun inside the vehicle. Also recovered from inside the vehicle was 11.5 grams of cannabis. When the handgun was discovered one of the passengers, a 19-year old Evanston man, fled on foot. The man was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit and transported to the Evanston Police Department, said the Commander.
During the following investigation the admitted to possession of the handgun, and it was also determined that man was in possession of the cannabis. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved a felony charge of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon - Under 21 Years of Age, said the Commander.
