Police Investigate Home Invasion
Submitted by the EPD

On Nov. 27, at approximately 11:50 a.m. Evanston police, in response to a 911 call, responded to a residence in the 100 Block of Burnham Place in reference to a ruse burglary that had just occurred, said Perry Polinski, Media Relations for the Evanston Police Department.

Upon arrival, responding officers learned from the victim, an 82 year old female resident, that she had answered a knock at the front door when she was confronted by a heavy set, dark complected possibly Hispanic male subject who claimed that there was a sewer issue next door and demanded entry to look at and repair her system, said Mr. Polinski.

After the victim advised him that she was not having any problem and attempted to close the door, the subject brushed past her, knocking her to the floor, and proceeded to enter the residence. Upon recovering and getting back on her feet, another two to three subjects entered the residence. After asking the victim for money, two of the subjects proceeded to the second floor where dresser drawers were ransacked. In the meantime, the other two subjects remained on the first floor with the victim, at one point, one of them physically restraining her. The four subjects, all described as foreign speaking males, approximately 25 years old, with dark complexions then quickly exited the residence, entered a white possibly newer model SUV, and fled in a west bound direction. Subsequently, the victim, who received only minor injuries and refused medical treatment, reported that a pair of gold earrings and a bracelet were missing. An evidence technician also responded to process the scene and detectives continue to investigate, said Mr. Polinski.

The Evanston Police Department is urging residents to be aware of this type of scam and only speak to strangers through locked doors. Call police immediately and give a description of the suspect(s), vehicle and a direction of travel.

Anyone with information regarding this particular incident is asked to contact the Evanston Police Department at (847) 866-5070 or utilize Text-A-Tip by texting CRIMES (274637) and entering EPDTIP in the message line, followed by the tip information.
