The Police Clergy-Chaplain team and the Citizen Police Academy held a brief appreciation ceremony on May 22 for the members of the Evanston Police Department.

“Police officers serve day-in and day-out,” said Chaplain Joey Rodger, at the start of the 3 p.m. service at the Police Station, 1454 Elmwood Ave.

Mayor Stephen Hagerty said, “It is my pleasure as Mayor of Evanston to look out at the finest police force in the country. I love the fact that the chief grew up in this force.

“The Evanston Police see the underbelly of the City: drugs, mental health issues, domestic assaults, distracted drives. You see it every day; you handle it with aplomb. Thank you from the City Council.”

Pastor Monte Dillard of First Church of God said, “I thank each and every one of you for the sacrifice that each and every one of you do every day that our community might find peace, even in great turmoil.  As challenging as the world is, it would be much worse without you.”

Pastor Phillip Bentley of Mount Zion Tabernacle Apostolic Church asked for a moment of silence to remember Chicago-area police officers who died over the past year.

President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation in 1962, designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week of that date Police Week. Mayor Hagerty proclaimed May 12-25 as Police Appreciation Weeks in Evanston.
