At the Oct. 10 Working Board/Finance Committee meeting, District 65 Board President Candance Chow administered the oath of office to Anya Tanyavutti.

The Board selected Ms. Tanyavutti to  fill the vacancy left by Jennifer Phillips, who resigned her position on Aug. 31.

The School Board invited interested community members to apply for the opening and applicant interviews were held during the week of Oct. 3.

“We received a number of applications from both District 65 parents and members of the Evanston/Skokie community, each of whom would have been a great addition to the School Board. Their commitment to serving our children and to making our school system stronger was apparent in both written responses and during the interviews,” said Ms. Chow. “We are excited to welcome Ms. Tanyavutti to the Board and look forward to bringing her expertise and perspective to the Board’s work going forward.”

“I am proud to join the District 65 School Board in the important work that it does on behalf of all families,” said Ms. Tanyavutti. “I am incredibly grateful that our family has access to the public school system, yet I believe there are many opportunities within Evanston/Skokie to strengthen the quality and consistency of the education that it provides to ensure that every child has equal opportunities to benefit from these rich resources.”

Ms. Tanyavutti has more than 15 years of experience working in the fields of education, non-profit leadership, and community engagement. In 2003, she traveled as a Fulbright Scholar to Senegal, West Africa, as part of a curriculum development team. Her work history includes administrative leadership of a Community Schools department, youth development program administration, teaching at the elementary level, and strategic planning consultation.

Board member Richard Rykhus thanked Board member Tracy Quattrocki for leading the Board through the selection process. Ms. Tanyavutti’s term will run until the April 2017 election.
