Dr. Goren and School Board Mutually Agree to Leadership Transition
Both the Board and Dr. Goren agree that this is an opportune time to transition the leadership to build on the progress made over the past five years. Since assuming his position, Dr. Goren and the Board led the successful passage of the 2017 Referendum and have successfully negotiated labor contracts with the five unions representing the district’s employees.

From House to Home
The house that glided up Dodge Avenue on June 24 was an Evanston house from floor to rooftop. It was designed by local architect DonnaLee Floeter and built by the 99 students in Evanston Township High School’s Geometry in Construction class.

School District 65 Reaches Five-Year Deals With Teachers and Paraprofessionals
On June 10, the District 65 School Board unanimously approved collective bargaining agreements with the District Educators Council (DEC, the teachers union) and the Evanston Teacher Assistant Association (ETAA). Each contract runs for five years.

D65 Finance Committee Defers Vote on Using ETHS Day School for Students with Special Needs
She said the classroom at the Day School would provide a small, specialized setting for up to eight seventh- or eighth-graders who were returning to school from being hospitalized with an opportunity to remain in the community and not be transported for one-and-a-half hours to three hours per day to and from a private day school.

D65 Administrators Propose Adding Three Assistant Principals
At the June 3 meeting of  the Finance Committee of the District 65 School Board, Kathy Zalewski, Business Manager, presented a draft tentative budget for the 2019-2020 school year. The Committee’s discussion focused on a proposal to add three Assistant Principals for Special Services and Restorative Practices.

Joyce Bartz Honored for 40 Years of Service
Joyce Bartz was honored at the District 65 School Board’s June 10 meeting after completing 40 years of service at the District. She started out at Nichols Middle School and finished her tenure as Assistant Superintendent for Special Services. She led special education services in the District for many years, brought restorative justice programs to the District and promoted a safe and supportive climate for students and staff in the schools.

D65 Will Phase in Zum for Transportation
On June 10, the District 65 School Board approved using Zum Services, Inc., as an alternative to 303 Taxi to transport students who need transportation services and who do not use the school bus. District 65 will be the first school district in Illinois to use Zum.

ETHS Alum Pledges $330,000 For New Wellness & Performance Center
Evanston Township High School students will begin the 2019-20 school year with a completely renovated Wellness & Performance Center, thanks largely to a pledge from alumnus Michael B. Arrington (Class of 1961). A former varsity football player, Mr. Arrington pledged $330,000 to the ETHS Foundation to support a new strength and conditioning center at the high school.

MAP Normative Data Shows Significantly Higher Achievement Levels for CPS Students than NAEP or PARCC
In recent years, Paul Zavitkovsky, a researcher and leadership coach at the Center for Urban Education Leadership Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, noticed that MAP tests are generating significantly higher results than those generated by the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) and the Illinois PARCC tests.

The Role of Foster School in the Implementation of School District 65's Desegregation Plan in 1967 and Its Closing in 1979
Foster School, virtually an all-Black school in 1966, was closed as a neighborhood school in 1967 as part of the District’s desegregation plan, and it was closed altogether in 1979.

ETHS Students Finish Strong in DECA Competition
In April 2019, Evanston Township High School students competed in the DECA International Career Development Conference held in Orlando, Fla. As finalists in the state competition, 22 ETHS students earned the opportunity to join more than 10,000 DECA members who demonstrated their college and career knowledge and skills by participating in DECA’s Competitive Events Program.

District 65 Announces New Principal of Kingsley Elementary
On June 10, the District 65 School Board approved the appointment of Mr. David Davis as the next principal of Kingsley Elementary. Mr. Davis will officially begin in his new role on July 1, 2019.
