District 65 Reports Results on Consolidation of Algebra 8 and Algebra 1 in the Middle Schools
On Nov. 5, David Wartowski, District 65’s Director of STEM, gave a report on the consolidation of Algebra 8 and Algebra 1 into a mixed-level course called “Algebra for All.”

District 65 School Board Approves 2019 Summer Learning Program
On Nov. 12, the District 65 School Board unanimously approved a 2019 Summer Learning Program. Jamilla Pitts, Summer Learning Coordinator for the District, told Board members that the summer program proposed for 2019 would be very similar to the one provided by the District in 2018.

Racial Slurs at Lincolnwood School
At the Nov. 12 School Board meeting, Dr. Goren recounted that in the past several weeks there had been “hateful, racist and sometimes violent language used by some students in District 65.” Dr. Goren added, “This harmful language is not unique at Lincolnwood and has negatively impacted communities of color across our schools for too long."

New, Revised Courses Proposed for Next Year at ETHS
The annual review of courses has begun at Evanston Township High School, and there are eight new courses and nine revisions of existing courses being proposed. There are no course deletions currently being considered. The District 202 School Board heard the initial report on the course review during their Nov 12 meeting.

Auditorium and Turf Among ETHS Capital Improvements
A five-year Capital Improvement Program totaling $32.6 million will move forward at ETHS after being reviewed by the District 202 School Board at its Nov. 12 meeting. Projects to be tackled in FY2019 include new football turf, lighting and sound improvements in the auditorium and other infrastructure needs to the tune of $5.8 million.

District 202 Board Hosts Community Conversation
The ETHS District 202 Board of Education will host a community conversation  from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 27 in the school’s Welcome Center (E112), 1600 Dodge Ave.The conversation, open to the public, will cover the topics of progress since the District adopted is goals and the management of the work to achieve them.

ETHS Engineering Night, Nov. 29
Evanston Township High School will host an Engineering Information Night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 in the auditorium.  Students in grades 8-11 and their families are encouraged to attend to learn about Project Lead the Way (PLTW) engineering courses offered at ETHS and hear about college credit options and scholarship opportunities available for students completing PLTW engineering courses.

School Boards Want Additional Data to Measure Progress on Joint Reading Goal
While there was significant discussion about the limited data provided and the lack of alignment of the data, Pete Bavis, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction at District 202, said the freshman class this year at Evanston Township High School includes 128 students who are not proficient in reading. “We’re not knocking it out of the park no matter what data we’re using,” he said.

Garden Club Prepares to Turn 90, Digs New Gardens with ETHS
Lincolnwood Garden Club of Evanston will turn 90 in the coming year, but it is creating gardens in a new way. With some of the funds it raises from its annual spring garden sale, held every year on Central Street, it created its first home garden for the ETHS Geometry in Construction House.

District 65 Declines in Four of Five Areas on 2018 5Essential Survey
Results of an annual 5Essentials survey show that in the 2017-18 school year, School District 65 declined in four of the five areas deemed critical for school success. The survey is administered under the auspices of the Illinois State Board of Education.

ETHS Boosterpalooza on Sept 8
Evanston Township High School Boosters is hosting its sixth annual Boosterpalooza from 6 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 8 at the Sherman Plaza Garage Rooftop, 821 Davis St.  The event brings together people from throughout the community to support ETHS students while enjoying a line-up of local bands, food and beverages under the stars.

MAP Normative Data Shows Significantly Higher Achievement Levels for CPS Students than NAEP or PARCC
In recent years, Paul Zavitkovsky, a researcher and leadership coach at the Center for Urban Education Leadership Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, noticed that MAP tests are generating significantly higher results than those generated by the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) and the Illinois PARCC tests.
