Ambitious Goals and Community Support at Officer and Gentlemen Academy Kickoff
Gabe Rosen was “kind of skeptical” when he joined the first class of the Officer and Gentlemen Academy two years ago. He soon learned that “The officers care about us. They want the best for us. They are trying to prepare us for life,” he told the crowd of some 100 people at the Jan. 26 kickoff for the Officer and Gentlemen Academy.

ETHS Jazz Festival This Weekend
 Evanston Township High School’s annual jazz festival will be held on Feb. 9, culminating with an evening concert by the Chicago State University Community Jazz Band. The ETHS Jazz Ensemble will open the concert in the ETHS auditorium under the direction of Matthew Bufis, Director of Bands. The festival’s noontime concert will feature the Lowdown Brass Band.

'The Evanston Fatherhood Initiative' Feb. 21
The Infant Welfare Society of Evanston (IWSE) will premiere its documentary film, “The Evanston Fatherhood Initiative,” at 6 p.m. on Feb. 21 at Family Focus Theater, 2010 Dewey Ave. Open to the public, the screening will include a welcome reception and panel discussion.

EvanSTEM and EPL to Offer Six STEM Mini-Camps This Summer
EvanSTEM, a project within Evanston-Skokie School District 65, and the Evanston Public Library plan to run six STEM mini-camps this summer with the help of a grant of $10,000 received from Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc. The mini-camps will help provide underrepresented and underserved students across Evanston with technology and engineering learning.

Baker Eighth Graders Compete in Annual Cardboard Regatta
Baker Demonstration School eighth-graders gathered on Jan. 11 for their annual cardboard Boat Regatta. The competition is more than a fun spectator event for the whole school – it also serves as the cumulative project for the eighth-graders’ classroom explorations in physics and math.

School District 65 Incoming Kindergarten Events
Evanston/Skokie School District 65 is inviting families of incoming kindergartners to learn more about the kindergarten experience through a special event series this winter. Children must be five years-old on or before September 1 to register for kindergarten.

Four Candidates Have Filed to Run for District 65 School Board and Four for District 202
According to the website of the Cook County Clerk’s Office, four candidates have filed to run for the District 65 School Board in the April 2, 2019 Consolidated Election, and four have filed to run for the District 202 School Board. Three positions will be filled on each Board.

MAP Normative Data Shows Significantly Higher Achievement Levels for CPS Students than NAEP or PARCC
In recent years, Paul Zavitkovsky, a researcher and leadership coach at the Center for Urban Education Leadership Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, noticed that MAP tests are generating significantly higher results than those generated by the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) and the Illinois PARCC tests.
