School District 65 Incoming Kindergarten Events
Evanston/Skokie School District 65 is inviting families of incoming kindergartners to learn more about the kindergarten experience through a special event series this winter. Children must be five years-old on or before September 1 to register for kindergarten.

ETHS Bridge-Building Champs
This year, as always, students in the 39th annual Evanston Township High School Bridge Building and Breaking Contest constructed many interesting bridges.
The first-place winner was Hanus Symersky. A student in Jacob Mills’s class, Hanus built a bridge that held 6.7 kilograms. Ellie Stein placed second with 6.6 kilograms; she is a student in Sarah Gersowsky’s class.

Kiwanis Club Honors ETHS Scholar Athletes
The Kiwanis Club of Evanston presented six Evanston Township High School scholar athletes with the Van Zelst award, named for Ted Van Zelst, a prominent Evanston businessman who excelled in science, the arts and humanitarian causes.

Hearing Officer Recommends That Nicholas Korzeniowski Not Appear on the Ballot for District 65 School Board
On Dec. 24, Suni Kartha, President of the District 65 School Board, filed objections to Mr. Korzenioswki’s nomination papers and asked that his name not appear as a candidate for the District 65 School Board on the April 2 ballot.

On Dec. 24, Suni Kartha, President of the District 65 School Board, filed objections to the nominating petitions filed by Nicolas Korzeniowski to run as a candidate for the District 65 School Board, and asked that he not be allowed on the ballot in the April 2 election.

A standing-room only crowd of about 150 people attended the District 65 School Board’s meeting on Dec. 17, to voice their concerns about racial slurs being made at the District’s schools and to show support for eradicating racism and hateful language at the schools.

ETHS Alt(ernative) School Awards 122 Diplomas in Three Years
“The Alt(ernative) School was implemented to address our student population that is experiencing significant academic, social/emotional and attendance difficulties in the traditional school setting,” said Ms. Kinzie. Students who qualify have experienced issues such as chronic truancy, a shortage of credits or other issues leading to lack of success. Some are GED Eligible. A grade-level support team can refer students, and students can also self-refer.

Renewed Oakton-ETHS Partnership to OPen Pathways Increase College Enrollment
Enrollment by ETHS graduates at Oakton is relatively low compared to many nearby high schools. There are currently 691 Evanston residents attending Oakton representing 8% of Oakton’s total enrollment.

ETHS Community Fills Empty Bowls
For the past 19 years, Evanston Township High School has hosted its annual Empty Bowl event to support local soup kitchens and food pantries. On Dec. 5, staff and students from the ETHS Community Service Club, Career & Technical Education (culinary), Fine Arts (ceramics), and staff from Operations and Nutrition Services planned and implemented the event to help raise awareness and funds to fight local hunger.

District 65's New Compostable Trays Keep Styrofoam Out of Landfills
Beginning this school year, District 65 cafeterias no longer serve student food on Styrofoam trays. Efforts pushed by the District’s volunteer Green Teams have replaced the trays with compostable ones, drastically reducing the impact on local landfills.

A Hands-On Approach to Reading Kindergarten LEAP Year
Getting a great start in Kindergarten can set the stage for the rest of a child’s education. Kindergarten LEAP (Literacy Education At Play) was created by Evanston Public Library staff to help District 65’s youngest students build literacy and social skills through innovative play scenarios. Coordinated by children’s outreach librarian Laura Antolin, the program provides a wide range of interesting and fun things to do based around literacy.

ETHS Teacher Named 2018-19 Teaching Policy Fellow
ETHS History and Social Sciences teacher Corey Winchester was selected by Teach Plus as one of 20 educators to serve as Fellows of its Illinois Policy Fellowship 2018-19 cohort. Teach Plus is a national nonprofit that empowers teachers to lead improvements in policy and practice.

Four Candidates Have Filed to Run for District 65 School Board and Four for District 202
According to the website of the Cook County Clerk’s Office, four candidates have filed to run for the District 65 School Board in the April 2, 2019 Consolidated Election, and four have filed to run for the District 202 School Board. Three positions will be filled on each Board.

MAP Normative Data Shows Significantly Higher Achievement Levels for CPS Students than NAEP or PARCC
In recent years, Paul Zavitkovsky, a researcher and leadership coach at the Center for Urban Education Leadership Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, noticed that MAP tests are generating significantly higher results than those generated by the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) and the Illinois PARCC tests.
