Editorial and Analysis: In the Interest of Transparency, Meetings Between the Top Leaders of The D65 School Board, the Top Administrators of D65, and the Top Leaders Of DEC Should Be in the Open
The President and Vice President of the District 65 School Board have partnered together and conducted meetings at which they, top administrators of the School District and top leaders of the District Educators Council (DEC, the teachers union) have met for the purpose of discussing important issues facing the School District and reaching shared solutions.

Teacher Compensation Under New DEC Contract
Under the contract, an individual teacher’s salary may increase in three ways: 1) an increase in base salary, which is in the nature of a cost of living increase; 2) a “Step” increase, which is an increase based on years of experience or service; and 3) and an increase due to a “Track” movement.

Evanston Cradle to Career Lays Out Revised Strategic Plan
On Nov. 7, Katie Pacyna, Director of Reach and Evaluation, presented an updated strategic plan to the partners of the Evanston Cradle to Career (EC2C) initiative ...  About 50 people attended the meeting, including the leaders of many of the partnering organizations.

District 65 Finance Committee Recommends $10.2 Million Capital Spending Plan Over Next Five Years
On Nov. 4, Raphael Obafemi, District 65’s Chief Financial and Operations Officer, provided an overview of the District’s overall capital needs, together with recommendations for capital projects in the next five years. The needs far exceed the District’s resources to address them, so Mr. Obafemi explained the prioritization process he used in making his recommendations.

D65 School Board Is Interviewing Five Candidates for Superintendent
On Oct. 28, in a closed session meeting, representatives of BWP & Associates presented a report to the District 65 School Board advising that 31 people had completed an application for Superintendent of School District 65. BWP recommended five of the 31 people for the School Board to interview.

Update on Investigation of Alleged Sexual Assault at Haven
Commander Ryan Glew of the Evanston Police Department told the RoundTable there is a pending and active investigation and no one has been arrested. When asked specific questions, he said for the sake of the investigation, he could not comment further.

D65 Board Expands Policies Prohibiting Discrimination
On Oct. 21, the District 65 School Board approved changes to the Board’s policies to prohibit discrimination and harassment based on an employee’s gender or gender-related identity.

Student Participation in Extracurricular Activities
Evanston Township High School students last year had a choice of more than 80 non-sport clubs and activities to spend their free time. School officials encourage engagement in extracurricular activities, said Nicole Clark, Director of Activities and of the Student Success Center.

Alleged Sexual Assault at Haven Middle School
On Oct. 23, Phil Ehrhardt and  Heidi Wennstrom, School District 65’s Interim Superintendents, posted a statement concerning an incident at Haven Middle School on the District’s website. The statement said they received a report on Oct. 7 that a staff member engaged in “inappropriate conduct toward a student” during school hours on Friday, Oct. 4.

ETHS Students Help Create New Mural
A new mural titled “Fluent Foundations” is now on display in downtown Evanston at the Grove Street Metra underpass. Evanston Township High School students Collantes Cook, Ailsa Caughran, Caroline Roche, and Saige Severin worked closely with Chicago muralist Molly Zakrajsek, along with students from Beacon Academy and Roycemore School, to design and paint the piece.

The Evanston Township High School Speech and Debate team is thriving in local and regional tournaments for the 2019-20 school year. Senior Henry Eberhart qualified to the Tournament of Champions in Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Kiwanis Club Honors Three 
Three members of the Evanston Township High School Wildkit Ensemble were recently recognized for their achievements in the arts by the Kiwanis Club of Evanston. Sylvi Imrem, Frances Petersen, and Brianna Silas each received the Ted Van Zelst Award.

MAP Normative Data Shows Significantly Higher Achievement Levels for CPS Students than NAEP or PARCC
In recent years, Paul Zavitkovsky, a researcher and leadership coach at the Center for Urban Education Leadership Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, noticed that MAP tests are generating significantly higher results than those generated by the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) and the Illinois PARCC tests.

The Role of Foster School in the Implementation of School District 65's Desegregation Plan in 1967 and Its Closing in 1979
Foster School, virtually an all-Black school in 1966, was closed as a neighborhood school in 1967 as part of the District’s desegregation plan, and it was closed altogether in 1979.
